When I was just a little boy I can warmly remember sitting on an antique barber chair at the local barber shop and watching my father receiving a haircut and shave. It is nothing like what it is today. There was an knack to it. The barber really cared about what he was doing and it was evident that my father enjoyed it. Not only that, but the barber shop was where men could hang out amongst themselves.

The haircuts were frequently so meticulous. My father would be sitting in one of the countless used barber chairs while the barber would willfully take his time to give the perfect cut. Nearly all men kept their hair short as that was the style back then. After the hair cut was a shave. This wasn't a shave as we imagine today, with foam from a can and a molded disposable razor. Instead, the lather was put on with a brush and a straight razor was chosen. It looks terrifying, but it is the smoothest shave you can ever receive. After the shave was the hot towel that every time felt so good.

The men would principally talk about sports or local politics, though the subject of women would come up often. It was a time to relax and get to know everyone a bit better. Now, when you get a haircut the chatting is kept to a minimum and you often try to get out as soon as possible.

As I walk by the local barber shop and make out the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I wonder why this rite has mostly vanished from our civilization. Do people not value a decent hair cut and shave anymore? Have we all become so anti-social that spending an afternoon being friendly with our friends and neighbors seems like a job? While I am not one to be bitter and only wish for "how things were", I do desire that people will recollect and respect the way it was just a couple years ago.
