Ceramic Barbecue Grills: The Big Green Egg Grill Vs. Other Barbeque Grills |
If you love to grill, you've most certainly discovered the Big Green Egg grill. It's a ceramic bbq grill that can be used as a bbq grill, smoker or even a brick oven. It's so versatile you could make anything from hamburgers and steaks and other classic grill foods to desserts, bread and even pizza.
Eggheads love the Big Green Egg, but you might be wondering what makes the Egg (as it's fondly referred to as) different from other grills.
Probably the biggest distinction is the appearance. The Big Green Egg smoker is well, green and in the shape of a big egg. While I could not say exactly why it's green, I can say that the egg shape appeared to be designed (purposely) to provide the ability to help you control and maintain the heat within the bbq grill better than other grills.
The next biggest difference is the material the grill is made of. Instead of being made with metal, the Big Green Egg has thick ceramic walls. Ceramic is much more sturdy than other materials, so the Egg will last longer than other grills and smokers, it can be cooked on any time of the year (even in freezing temperatures). It's also less dangerous than other grills, especially if there are little ones running around, because the ceramic exterior stays cooler than traditional metal barbecue grills and because you always grill with the lid down, so you don't have to be concerned with flare-ups.
There are numerous other differences but among my favorites would be the following the Big Green Egg has. There are Egg fans and gatherings all over the United States, and Eggheads are excited to share their stories, tips in addition to recipes at gatherings and also on the Egghead forum. I can't think of any other bbq grill that has this kind of following.
Now, the Egg does have some negatives when compared to other barbecue grills. For instance, it's not an inexpensive barbeque grill. You can expect to spend about $700 to get a large Big Green Egg. Also, you'll want to use lump wood charcoal, which isn't always easy to find and is usually a bit more costly than traditional charcoal briquettes. The Big Green Egg also has a smaller cooking surface area than many gas grills, which suggests you'll need a back-up grill if you're cooking for a lot of people.
Having said that, the versatility of the Big Green Egg grill, the capability to grill, smoke or bake with your Egg, and the amazing results you get (the Egg is very forgiving, even for newbie grillers) are worthy of the cost. If you are a barbeque enthusiast and you also do a lot of smoking in addition to grilling you'll love the quality and the results you will get with the Big Green Egg.
