I wanted to complete a piece on business and stress while building what I hope should be a great resource for people out there searching for somewhere to sit down, take a deep breath and soak up some good, informative material. Stress can play many roles in our day to day lifestyles, and seems to feel right at home in the corporate environment in particular. Time restraints on projects, fear of failure or not meeting desired goals, even success can lead to stress in our jobs and businesses. Stress can be a barricade to clear thinking and superior mental focus, so it is a clear difficulty in the business world, as well as our daily routines.

What Causes Stress?

Stress is actually necessary in living creatures, everyone has a built-in gauge that controls our response to it. Psychologists believe stress and reactive emotions like it are embedded in our psyche from early primordial days and have evolved with us as part of a survival instinct. Of course, as the humans social environment has changed, so has triggers for stress. What may have been highly emotional and a critical event in the everyday life of someone 5000 years ago, perhaps hunting for prey or evading a predator, nowadays may be the equivalent to researching statistics or coping with an unreasonable boss. Food and shelter are more easily available in this day and age, where survival is usually more aptly found on the job front. As a result, the body's response typically reserved for life-threatening experiences is turned on by life's mundane aggravations. Stress triggers -.

What Stress Can Cause

High levels of stress can lead to mental conditions such as feeling moody, tense or depressed. Stress also has been attributed to decreased functionality of the 'reasoning' or 'logical' facet of the brain lowering the decision making abilities while the emotional part of the brain will become a more heightened state. This can mean less productivity and can evolve into a vicious cycle as you become even more stressed while your mental abilities diminish. Stress can also cause physical difficulties such as headaches, upset stomach, back pain, and problems sleeping. It can weaken your immune system, making it harder to fight illness.

Is There A Cure?

With all the negatives that stress might bring, its good to know there are things you can do at home as well as at work to reduce the effects of stress.

Effective time management. Don't try to press those deadlines, give yourself plenty of time to get the things you need done, and then don't put it off. You will almost certainly feel much better finishing a project or goad ahead of time and typically with better end results.

Exercise. Exercise. Exercise. Its one of those things we never seem to find enough time for but is critical for stress management. Good for avoiding stress or, even when you experience anxiety I find just a walk around the parking lot or surrounding area can work wonders to relax my brain.

Get a good nights rest, eat well and take very good care of your body. Your physical self is linked in with your mental self.

Don't keep it in. Mention what's going on with others who are willing to listen. Quite often bringing a problem to coworkers or even your boss can relieve some of the worry by transforming the problem into a team endeavor. Humans are social creatures by nature, positive synergy with others can take much of the weight off your shoulders.

Break the cycle. Whatever your doing to cause a stress reaction is likely to not get better unless you change your direction. In fact, it is likely that it will only get worse until you decide to stop and tackle the problem from some other direction.

Time - Are We Really Slaves?

Time, we are all inevitably tied to it in some way shape or form. People are all mortal and have limited time, no matter how influential we are or what status we hold. The very idea of mortality can be a pretty stressful subject to some as well, or the very idea of not spending enough of it doing what we enjoy as apposed to what we must. Its and facet of life we all think of at one point or another. It is actually my belief that time could also be an ally, and how you put it to use and the choices you make tend to be the difference between having enough time or none at all.
