A Ninth Grader Drinks Excessively With His Friends, Experiences Alcohol Poisoning, And Finds Out That Listening In Class Can Affect Your Life |
Andy was a high school ninth grader who commonly seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a risk taking personality and commonly wanted to do what his older brothers were doing. The core glitch with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were therefore within their legal rights to operate a truck or car and to consume alcohol.
Andy, then again, had a tough time comprehending that as a fifteen-year-old teenager he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, however, Andy regularly drank with his pals after school, largely on the weekends.
One weekend, Andy was invited to drive around with some of his older guy friends. One of his friends was old enough to buy alcohol. After buying some wine coolers, wine, and beer, Andy and all of the guys went to a park and drank for something like two or three hours.
After drinking roughly nine glasses of wine, Andy started to feel nauseous and then threw up. When he lost consciousness on the baseball field, one of his buddies called 911 for immediate help. It was fortunate that the call for emergency help was made because when his pals went to the hospital to see Andy, they were informed that Andy had been exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms. More to the point, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.
After receiving alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was actually startled to ascertain that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had approximately five or ten alcoholic beverages. When he articulated this to the attending physician at the hospital, conversely, the healthcare practitioner told Andy that drinking five or ten bottles of beer over a two or three hour time frame could certainly be significantly more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body. The healthcare practitioner further explained how extreme amounts of alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's respiratory system and that when this happens, an individual can perish.
This was the first warning to Andy that he was drinking in a risky way and that there are consequences for such actions. The healthcare practitioner told Andy that he was a lucky young man because he almost perished from alcohol poisoning the previous night.
The healthcare professional also spoke to Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol rehab for Andy. His parents were thrilled that Andy was out of harm's way and told the physician that they would get Andy alcohol rehabilitation.
While conversing with his parents, Andy notified them that there must be a solid reason why he did not die and that he felt a sense of thanksgiving that he was still alive. He also informed his parents that the strangest part about the entire drinking situation was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the previous six week grading period at school in Mr. Johnson's health class.
At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was articulating didn't seem to make a lot of sense to Andy. Now that he almost passed away, conversely, he felt that he should have listened more closely in class and applied what he had learned to his daily living.
Andy informed his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to the classroom and make an apology to Mr. Johnson for not showing more attention to something that was as significant as learning about alcohol poisoning.
