A Compassionate Boss Helps A Worker Address His Hazardous And Abusive Drinking After A Destroyed Relationship

Barry dropped out of high school when he was sixteen years old and eventually got a job at a local brewing company. For the past nine-and-a-half years he has earned a reputation as a diligent and hard-working employee who rarely takes off from work because of sickness.

Approximately four-and-a-half months ago he started going out with a woman named Carol. They appeared to get along real well immediately and looked like they had a lot of good times with one another.

When Barry met Carol, he rarely drank. This totally changed when they started dating on a basis. As a matter of fact, their relationship was going fine until Carol surprisingly called Barry one night roughly 2 AM and said that she had to call off their relationship and that she couldn't explain the reason at that moment.

The next morning before he went to work, Barry went to her apartment and found out in an instant that she had already moved out. Barry took this exceptionally hard. In actual fact, he was surprised because they seemed to be getting along so very well.

So what did Barry do about Carol? Instead of working through his suffering and pain, he started getting inebriated almost every night. It didn't take very long for his fellow employees and for his manager to notice that Barry was coming to work late at least once per week and that he again and again called off ill. Moreover, some of his co-workers made an appointment with staff in the HR Department and said that Barry continually came to work with a strong smell of alcohol on his clothes or on his breath.

Barry's supervisor heard about all of this from Human Resources and also from Barry's fellow employees. So one Thursday afternoon he asked Barry to come into his office. He mentioned to Barry that he had recently noticed an extreme change in his attendance, behavior, work performance, and in his sick time.

"Barry, I am not an expert about alcohol facts and I'm not especially all that conversant with alcoholism facts, but I have personally seen more than a few of my relatives and friends experience some really painful problems because of their abusive and irresponsible drinking. My recommendation is that you learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse can do to an individual."

"Why is this significant? When people engage in abusive and heavy drinking, their drinking difficulties not only negatively affect the drinker, but they also adversely impact her or his friends, co-workers, neighbors, family, and relatives. Barry, in short, I want you to get some help for your hazardous and heavy drinking from our fine employee's assistance program."

Barry respected his supervisor a lot and as a result followed through with his recommendation the next work day when he called and made an appointment with a psychologist in the employee's assistance program. Although Barry didn't necessarily feel any less depressed or feel better about the pain in his heart about Carol, he felt some reassurance knowing that his boss and his fellow employees cared about him and wanted what's best for him. This gave him some emotional relief for the first time in quite a few months and he honestly felt some hope that he would get his life back on track.
