Q. How large are
fibroids?
Answer: The size of fibroids varies a great deal
among women. Fibroid tumors are almost always benign,
almost never cancerous.
Some fibroid tumors are so small that you would need
a microscope to see them.
Normally they range in size from a tiny speck, (like
a small seed) to pea sized, to walnut sized, to lime sized, and up to orange sized. The
large majority fall into one of these size categories.
In exceptional cases, fibroid tumors can
grow to be up to cantaloupe size.
A very few become large masses, big enough that
they can take up the entire abdominal area. When they are this large they distort the uterus and
nearby organs.
Large tumors like that can weigh as much as 50 pounds
(22.7 kilos)!
The largest fibroid ever found and recorded weighed
in at 140 pounds (63.6 kilos)!!
[I don't know whether that's in the Guiness Book of
World Records or not, but whether it is or isn't, I wouldn't recommend that anyone try to better
that record... 8-) - The Editor]
